Dave Ramsey’s Momentum Theorum
Tonight I drove out to Nashville to hear Dave speak at a local real estate investor’s group called ‘REIN’ (Real Estate Investors Nashville). I had wanted to record it, and had my digital recorder going until some guy next to me was nice enough to reprimand me for it. I honestly don’t think that Dave would have cared, as he seems to be the type who wants people to hear his message, and does not mind a bit of free advertisement.
I wasn’t going to share it with anyone other than my wife anyhow… but I decided not to get into it with my nosy neighbor, and I put it away. I wasn’t really as upset with that though… as I was about what he said after I put it away.
‘It’s only inspirational anyhow, it’s not facts’…
Now, I get what he was saying. I have been to my share of seminars packed with information… and being without a digital recorder at those things after paying several thousand dollars to attend will leave you a bit cranky. So what he was saying was ‘There isn’t that much to keep up with’.
The thing is… I was there to be inspired. I was also there to bring something back to inspire my family, and perhaps a few other people around me while I was at it. It is the inspirational stuff that actually wakes me up in the morning. Not facts. I can get facts from anywhere… but true inspiration is rare and worth remembering.
So… I took notes on my iPhone. Glad I had battery life left.
These are my notes from the meeting… Sorry they are a bit scattered, but they are fresh.
Dave’s Momentum Theorum is:
FI / T * G = Unstoppable Momentum!
F = Focus
He told a story about a football player who he once talked with… a kid making $3.5mil/yr. as a running back. He wondered how… with a guy who was considered to be one of the best of the best… a professional athelete… could ‘drop the ball’. The young man replied… ‘I lose focus sometimes’.
Dave asked him ‘How do you lose focus?’
1) Fear
Fear will cause you to lose focus, and take your eyes of the ball.
2) Greed
Focusing on the prize instead of the goal. You need to be OCD about providing for the needs of others.
You should … Bring the ball in, catch the ball, and then be surprised when you get the touchdown.
I = Intensity
This is the fuel on the fire! You really need Focus and Intensity together. Focus without intensity goes nowhere, Intensity without Focus goes everywhere. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
It’s ‘Squirrel Theology’ … where the squirrel can’t make up his mind which way to go while in the middle of the road until… SQUISH!
T = Time
Dave talked about Malcom Gladwell’s book ‘Outliers’, and how people like Bill Gates, David Green, or anyone who is a true professional at what they do… at the national level… has accumulated 10,000 hours worth in practice at their craft. It takes time, it takes practice.
If you spend 30 days of focused intensity on anything, you will effect change in that area.
If you spend 1 year of focused intensity on anything, everyone around you will begin to notice.
A tid-bit from a Billionaire:
1) You need to be a giver. If you ever stop giving, you will not make it. Intentionally develop a giving spirit.
2) There is a good book you need to read: “The Tortoise and The Hare”… the Tortoise always wins.
It takes time… in a culture that does not respect time. We don’t respect that it takes time to be world class.
G = God.
Everything is exponentially multiplied when God is involved.
So there you have it… FI / T * G = Unstoppable Momentum!
