hummingbird blues

we’ve got a feeder attached to one of the windows on the back of our house, so we attract quite a few of these little guys. today while taking out the trash, i noticed one flitting about in our garage, apparently without any sense of direction because it just wanted to go ‘up’. with the huge gaping hole that is our garage door… you would think he would easily manage his way home!

after trying to gently guide him out the door with the bottom of a broom, he finally settled on resting on the top side of the open garage door, just out of reach of this crazy broom wielding giant! i could tell he was really exhausted, and these birds need to eat so much sugar to maintain their energy… i was worried that it would get to be too warm in that garage for him, and we’d wind up with a little hummingbird corpse on our garage door.

i finally got him to fly again, and was able to gently guide him out the garage door! he flew kinda like a cartoon bi-plane running out of gas, sorta sputtering along… as his engine would start, he’d gain altitude… then the engine would stop… and he’d begin to fall… start… stop… start… stop… until he was out of sight. hope he gets something to eat! poor guy!
