We’re Pregnant!

Last week, Melissa started feeling a bit ‘icky’, and while she wasn’t exactly ‘late’ … we haven’t been exactly ‘careful’ lately, and she was definitely symptomatic, so I urged her to take a test. Sure enough, it came back positive! This past saturday (the 19th) we went to see her doctor for a second opinion. Doctors are so funny… she says ‘You’re very pregnant!’.

How exactly can you be just ‘partially pregnant’?

She went through the regular checkup… blood pressure, temperature, etc… and had blood drawn for a thyroid test. Everything came back ok… so Mom’s healthy!

So… one of the questions that everyone so far has asked us … ‘Do you want a boy or a girl?’ … our response has been simply… ‘healthy’. Funny story there though… an older couple who lives across the street from us asked me that… and I answered the same way I’ve been answering everyone else… and the old man responds with all sincerity… ‘yeah… just hope it’s not deformed or nothin.’!!! His wife actually nodded in agreement… saying … ‘yeah… that’s for sure!’. Old people are so funny. I hope I live long enough to instill the hope of a non-deformed child into a newly pregnant couple! :)

Just for giggles… I checked out the price of diapers yesterday… 125 huggies for $39.95. Must be due to the price of oil. :)
I’m wondering how many diapers babies go through in a week? Newborns apparently need to be changed every hour!

We’ve been talking about cloth diapers… and hiring a green diaper service. Not sure if there are any here in Rutherford County, but I did find these folks in Davidson (population) and Williamson (money) Counties: http://www.smilemommy.com/ . Looks like about $30/week and they wash them and deliver new ones! Anyhow… cloth diapers are much more eco-friendly… but we’ll have to research a bit more to find out about comfort and effectiveness. :) Amazing to think that there is actually a 501-c3 devoted to cloth diapers! (http://www.realdiaperassociation.org/)

We also need to start shopping for clothes for Melissa! Sexy pregnant momma! :)

Congrats! This is such a familiar story to us; we are now expecting our second ’surprise’:)

We have siblings who are currently using the [modern] cloth diapers, and they actually work out really well.

    awesome! congrats!
i’m figuring we’ll probably be able to make the cloth diapers work one way or another. i just don’t like the idea of contributing to the mounting landfill problem here in my county.

I saw your post on the 615. What wonderful news! (I won’t share it with anyone but Jason until I get your OK though.) I hope Melissa is feeling good and I know you two are happy and excited.

We used cloth diapers and covers and had good success…when Caleb got older we switched to disposables somewhere along the way. I really liked the cloth ones and was able to keep them pretty much non-smelly. I did the washing which wasn’t so bad since it was just a part of the routine. I’m pretty sure their are diaper services this direction too and I know there’s a lady in the Smyrna area who sells cloth diapers and has her own website. Caleb didn’t seem to mind them at all though some covers seemed to fit him better than others.

I’m thinking about switching over to cloth again just to potty train him more easily.

Anyway, enough about us…you two are going to be great parents! I’m very happy for you both. Lemme know if you need any info. on anything. I’m glad to help.

haha! yes, we’re excited, but nervous! we haven’t announced it to LWF yet… though Steve and Theresa know. We’re going to announce it Friday, though anyone who reads my blog will know anyhow. :)

Massive congratulations, man! Our first just hit the 12 week mark and it’s been the best 12 weeks of my life. I truly had no idea how great having a child was going to be - or how powerless I would be to a little girl’s cries.

Being up to 2 kids now and still in diapers with the second, I can tell you that diaper costs DO add up. What is a bit annoying is that with each size jump, there seems to also be a quantity drop without any change in pricing. I guess the assumption is that you are using less. But my son who is now 21 months old goes through 3-6 a day.

My sister had a baby in January and they have been using a hybrid of cloth and disposable diapers. Cloth diapers are a decent idea IF you have the time and stamina to keep up with them (and you should have enough on hand to keep you from babysitting the washing machine). The newer cloth diapers are cool because there are 2 parts - an outer shell and an inner absorbing pad - that way you can reuse the shell (if it is stays clean) a few times before washing it and if one of the inserts is particularly messy or you are out and about you can toss it.

Just be prepared not to be prepared - having kids is truly a life-changing event. It is awesome and full of surprises.

Good advice found here on the cloth diaper approach. For our two (I use ‘our’ here in spite of the fact I’m no longer married to their mother…) we used disposables only for trips outside the house. The routine of laundering cloth diapers was a minor inconvenience compared to the benefit of lowering our household waste output.

Regardless, congrats on the new member of the household. Even before they arrive they change the house in so many ways.

    Hey Melissa and Jim,
CONGRATULATIONS! I’m so happy for you two! I’ll pray for a safe, and healthy pregnancy/baby! I’m SO happy!
    love,
    Amber
