Chateau Ste. Michelle 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon

I haven’t actually reviewed a wine in quite a while… and I had someone comment on another review, so I figured may-haps I’d finish off a bottle and review it while I was in the mood. :)Melissa and I have always been happy with the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling, which my sister first introduced us to as her favorite. We decided that since we’ve had such good luck with that, we’d try out some of the vineyard’s other selections. This 2003 Cab Sav from the Washington state favorite vineyard… was the first of a few Chateau Ste. Michelle that we’ve opened, and we had it two nights ago with a very simple (but delicious) grilled steak and potatoes, and salad. I actually marinated the steak in a cup of the wine, and will post that marinade recipe here as well.

Though the bottle uses terms like ‘intense’ to describe itself, this wine is a lot softer and more subtle than most of the cabernets I’ve had. It is also not as oaky as I would have expected it to be considering that it spent some time in small oak barrels, which is actually good for me because I don’t like to eat wood while I drink my wine. The appearance is is a very dark burgandy (you can’t see through the glass), and the aroma is fruity… almost like cherry. If you like a cabernet that’s not to dry, not to sweet… this one is ‘just right’.

At $13, this wine is definitely worth buying and keeping on hand.

The only reason we didn’t finish this one off, is we had somewhere to go right after we ate… which is great for you, as I’m taking the time to drink the last glass and write about it now. :)
