Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 2004

Our friend Matt turned us on to Penfolds, a great Australian winemaker. This shiraz is a cool climate grape grown in Coonawarra South Australia since 1962. Penfolds has been making wine since 1844, and we’ve never been disappointed with anything we’ve gotten from them. Not a bad wine at all for $20.

We got this wine as part of our Christmas collection, and opened it New Years Eve. (technically someone else at the New Year’s party opened it).

It is a bit spicy, but not overwhelming like some other shiraz i’ve had… with a subtle bite that sits high in the back of your throat, but it is still very smooth like velvet over the tongue. It has a very deep, thick ruby color that reminds me a bit of a jelly / jam, but this is definitely not your grandma’s wine. :)

I honestly don’t have the greatest nose, but could still smell some red or black berry / fruits, and a slight oak (maybe cedar?) scent, along with a distinct (but soft) pepper. It just smells really good.

Today we’re having what’s left of it, drinking it alone (without any food) … but it would definitely go well with steak, or even a burger. Actually… to be honest… i just started my second glass with a Hershey’s kiss. yum.
